Ava DuVernay born August 24, 72 at Long Beach in California. Her aunt Denise was a great influence on her enthusiasm for the arts and her creative side. The aunt who was a night shift nurse, allowed her to pursue art literature and the theater during daylight hours. DuVernay instantly was captivated when she showed her the 1961 West Side Story film. DuVernay discovered through her example that art can be a vehicle for activism. DuVernay grew up with her mother who was socially aware and taught her how to use the arts as a means of expressing herself. Although DuVernay was raised living in Compton with her family she spent every summer at Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family lived for generations. DuVernay's Father recalled witnessing the historic march of Civil Rights Movement over the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. The DuVernay family visited Selma over the summer months and was inspired to create a film about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the year 1990, DuVernay completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. After graduation she was enrolled at her first year at the University of California Los Angeles where she received degrees in English and African American studies. DuVernay began to develop an interest in broadcast journalism as a student. As an intern, she worked for CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was told to examine the garbage of a jury member's home. When she was dissatisfied with journalism due to the work she was handed, DuVernay decided to pursue the field of publicity. DuVernay started her career as a junior assistant to publicity for a film studio that was small, right after graduating from the college. She founded The DuVernay Agency, her company for public relations in 1999.
